In an effort to expand the reach of its humanitarian efforts around the world, Life for Relief and Development recently established an Orphan Sponsorship Program in the West African nation of Ghana.
This brings the total number of countries where Life’s operates Orphan Sponsorship Programs to seven: Afghanistan, Ghana, Iraq, Sierra Leone, and the Palestinian refugee camps in Jordan, Syria, and Lebanon.
Although Ghana enjoys a great deal of peace and stability, the country has a number of social and economic problems. Nearly 1 out of every 3 Ghanaians lives below the poverty line and almost half of the adult population is illiterate.
What’s more, there are an estimated 1.1 million Ghanaian children who are orphans, and of these, approximately 160,000 are infected with HIV/AIDS.
Immediately upon receiving a license by the Ghanaian government, Life went to work soliciting applications for orphan sponsorships. So far, 50 children have been identified as needing assistance, and Life is now looking to its donors to make sponsorship commitments of $50 a month for these orphans.
Sponsored orphans typically receive monthly deliveries of food, and are regularly afforded new clothing, medical check-ups, and educational assistance.
