World Orphans Day was observed in Iraq on April 11, 2007 with LIFE for Relief and Development hosting a luncheon in honor of the occasion at the Petroleum Cultural Center in Basra. More than 450 orphans and widows enjoyed a program that included recitation of verses from the Holy Qur’an, the singing of the Iraqi national anthem, speeches, songs, and games. Gifts donated by two of LIFE’s partners, Brother’s Brother Foundation and AmeriCare, were given to all of the children in attendance. LIFE also gave money to community organizations in Baghdad, Najaf, Karbala, Babel, Diwaniyya, and Mosul in support of their own World Orphans Day festivities. These events were covered by many Iraqi television and radio stations, as well as newspapers. Several of the journalists praised LIFE for sponsoring such events amidst the dangerous security situation that exists.
LIFE currently sponsors 650 orphans in Iraq. Each orphan receives support in 4 ways:
- They receive a basket of food every month.
- Four times a year, they are taken to stores and allowed to pick out their own school clothes, Eid clothes, and summer clothes. Picking out their clothes helps boost their self-confidence and gives them a greater sense of dignity.
- They are provided healthcare.
- They participate in Eid celebrations and receive gifts on all holidays.
