Youth Centers for Eritrean Refugee Camps

View Album

Far from the attention of most of the world in the eastern region of Sudan lies a string of camps where some 200,000 Eritrean refugees live in perpetual limbo.

The educational system in these camps is underfunded and poorly developed.  Thousands of children are without schooling.  These children roam the camps with nothing to do and become targets for those who wish to introduce them to harmful behavior.

In an effort to protect these children from exploitation and to provide them with a healthy environment to learn and play, LIFE for Relief and Development has established two youth centers in the Eritrean refugee camp of Shegerab.  The residents of this camp number 30,000.

The youth centers each have been equipped with televisions, satellite dishes, digital receivers, generators, and educational videos and DVDs.

The goal of this project is to provide an alternative and entertaining environment for all youth who have became a target for those peddling pornography in the camps.

Some 500 children from each camp are now benefiting from the centers, and their parents, elders, and teachers in the camp are very pleased.
