In the two years since Cyclone Sidr devastated parts of Bangladesh, hundreds of families continue to struggle in search of long-term shelter.  These storm survivors literally had their homes washes away by Cyclone Sidr, along with nearly all of their worldly possessions.

In response to this unfortunate situation, Life for Relief and Development came up with a plan to construct a brand new village for storm survivors in the Bagherhat District of Bangladesh.  The project was funded by the UAE-based Al Rahma Charity, which has worked with Life in the past to implement a number of humanitarian projects around the world.

The village, which cost over $325,000 USD to establish, includes 72 brand new two-bedroom homes, a new mosque, a new school, and a small medical clinic that will serve both the residents of the village as well as those surrounding it.

A ceremony was held in early November to celebrate the establishment of the village.  One by one, families came forward to receive the keys to their new home.  Their excitement and joy filled the air, and their prayers for the donors who made this project possible were plentiful.

Government officials, including the Minister of Agriculture as well as the head of the Bangladeshi Villages’ Association were on hand for the ceremony as well as a delegation of Life and Al Rahma representatives from Dubai.
