Life for Relief and Development continues providing aid to Haiti
History
The native Taino Amerindians who inhabited the island of Hispaniola when it was discovered by Columbus in 1492 were virtually annihilated by Spanish settlers within 25 years. In the early 17th century, the French established a presence on Hispaniola. In 1697, Spain ceded to the French the western third of the island, which later became Haiti.
In the late 18th century Haiti’s nearly half million slaves revolted and after a prolonged struggle, Haiti became the first black republic to declare independence in 1804. The poorest country in the Western Hemisphere, Haiti has been plagued by political violence for most of its history. |
A massive 7.0 magnitude earthquake struck Haiti in January 2010 with an epicenter about 15km south of Port-au-Prince the capital of Haiti. An estimated 2 million people lived in the zone of heavy structural damage. The earthquake was assessed as the worst in the region in over the last 200 years.
Haiti Facts
- Population: 9,801,664
- Infant Mortality Rate: 52.44 deaths/1,000 live births
- Average Family Income: $1200
- Unemployment Rate: 40.6%
Life in Haiti
Since January 12, 2010, when the earthquake struck Haiti destroying most of the city of Port-au-Prince leaving over 1 million people displaced from their homes, Life for Relief and Development has been working to provide assistance to the injured, displaced, homeless and orphaned.
Immediately after the earthquake struck, Life sent a team to provide emergency food and water to the victims. As part of our ongoing relief efforts Life provides food baskets during the holy of month of Ramadan and sacrifices animals and distributes meat to thousands of families during Eid Al-Adha. Life has sent 11 - 40 foot shipping containers filled with tents, blankets, bottled water, food, wheelchairs, walkers, crutches, canes, medical supplies and medicines from the U. S. to Haiti to provide relief to the Haitian people. Through the generosity of our donors and partners, Life was able to send over $3 million dollars in aid to Haiti.
During the rehabilitation phase after the earthquake, Life, with the help of its generous donors and partners, thoroughly renovated 6 Mosques that were damaged from the quake and at each site our team was able to renovate the abolition area and provide clean water to each Mosque.
