LIFE was originally founded in 1992 as a response to the humanitarian crisis created by the first Gulf War. Since 1992, Iraq has gone through two wars and some of the most brutal embargoes ever to be imposed upon a people in recent history. As a result, over two million Iraqi civilians have died due to malnutrition and disease, and more than a million children have been left orphaned and without proper care. LIFE has provided over $30 million in humanitarian aid to Iraq, impacting the lives of over 13 million Iraqis by implementing diverse humanitarian projects in the fields of health, education, human development, community development, water and sanitation, social, seasonal, and emergency relief programs.
LIFE began its operations in Iraq by initially offering orphan sponsorship to aid the many displaced and alone. Since 1992, the Orphan Sponsorship Program has expanded and now supports nearly 400 orphans in Iraq alone. Alongside orphan sponsorship, LIFE also manages medical clinics and upgrades healthcare centers as well as distributes wheelchairs. There are numerous Community Development Projects also managed that include repairing sewage stations and sponsoring soccer and volleyball tournaments for the youth.
