History The Palestinian territories are located in the Middle East bordering the Mediterranean Sea between Egypt and Israel. The West Bank borders with Jordan and Israel. The Palestinian Territories covering the West Bank and Gaza have been under a heavy onset of war since ancient times. At this point, 38% of the population lives below the poverty line, while the number of refugees continues to rise each year from the conflicts. Many innocent men, women, and children suffer from a lack of food, shelter, health care, and proper education. Economic resources are in a severe shortage while the government is unable to pay its own employees’ salaries. Restrictions on the movement of individuals and goods are squeezing the lifeline of the people in the West Bank and Gaza.  The economy’s private sector has been severely impacted and there is speculation that it may be on the verge of collapsing.    Palestine Facts Population: 5,100,000 Infant Mortality Rate: 22.4 deaths/1,000 live births Average Family Income: $2,900 Unemployment Rate: 40% Life in Palestine After the Intifada began in 2000, Life decided to begin work in the West Bank and Gaza and initially sent staff to assess the situation and needs of the Palestinian people. After witnessing their devastating economic and living conditions, Life decided to open a field office in Nazareth to carry out humanitarian assistance projects throughout the West Bank and Gaza. Life distributes food, blankets, wheelchairs to the handicapped, medical supplies to hospitals and clinics, and installs water tanks to improve the water availability to poor Palestinian households. Life also constructed 2 state-of-the art clinics for the Palestinian Red Crescent in the West Bank and Gaza. Life is determined to maintain its office in Nazareth so that it may continue to implement social programs and to provide the Palestinian people with emergency relief during their times of struggle.
