SOMALIA

Britain withdrew from British Somaliland in 1960. In 1969, a coup started authoritarian socialist rule. In early in 1991, Somalia descended into turmoil, and anarchy. In May 1991, northern clans declared an independent Republic of Somaliland. Although not recognized by any government, this entity has maintained a stable existence and continues efforts to establish a constitutional democracy, including holding municipal, parliamentary, and presidential elections. Beginning in 1993, a two-year UN humanitarian effort (primarily in the south) was able to alleviate famine conditions, but when the UN withdrew in 1995, having suffered significant casualties. IN 2009, the Parliament doubled in size to 550 seats with the addition of 200 ARS and 75 civil society members of parliament and a new President was elected. Life for Relief and Development has been working to provide emergency food assistance and clean water by digging water wells throughout the country. Since famine was declared by the UN, Life has been working to dig water wells. Life also supplies hospitals and clinics with medical supplies, equipment and medicines and has sent containers filled with higher education books to schools and universities in Somalia. Life also provides food baskets and fresh meat to struggling families during Ramadan and Eid Al-Adha

CAMPAIGNS IN THIS AREA

Education

This year, you can make a difference by helping us to provide needy children with school uniforms, shoes, socks, underwear and backpacks filled with stationary, pens, pencils and crayons.

Health

Life is aware of the present and looming threats to human health and safety in developing countries. We work around the clock to actively distribute medicine, medical supplies, and medical equipment, as well as build and renovate clinics and hospitals.

Water Wells

Water wells qualify as a source of ongoing charity. Donate a water well for your loved ones as a source of reward. Life digs water wells in villages and rural areas close to places of worship, hospitals, or schools.

Emergency Relief

The need for orphan sponsorship has increased tremendously within the last decade. The influx of war has caused many to flee their homes and become displaced, affecting children the most. We have regional offices in all the countries that we sponsor Orphans in.

Udhiyah/Qurbani

For many families in Muslim countries like Palestine, Iraq, Syria, Somalia, Sierra Leone, Ghana and Afghanistan, meat is considered a luxury item out of their reach.  During this holiday season, one of the most important acts of worship is the sacrifice of a sheep, goat or cow as an Udhiyah/Qurbani.

Ramadan

Every year, Life distributes Ramadan Food Baskets in over 23 countries and also hosts Iftar meals in Masjid Al-Aqsa in Jerusalem, villages in Africa and to communities in the USA.
