A Day of Joy and a Year of Support: Life for Relief and Development (LIFE) Reaches 125 Orphaned Children in Sri Lanka
Support That Goes Beyond Basic Needs
For a child who has lost a parent, financial hardship can affect everything from having the right supplies for school to the opportunities they have simply to enjoy being a child.
Many orphaned children in Sri Lanka are cared for by widowed mothers or guardians who must manage education, nutrition, healthcare and other household expenses with limited resources. The Orphan Sponsorship Program was designed to ease some of that pressure through ongoing financial assistance while also supporting children’s emotional and social well-being.
In April 2026, Life for Relief and Development (LIFE) supported 125 orphaned children through financial assistance and a special day created around something equally valuable: happiness, friendship and new experiences.
125 Children Supported in April 2026
On April 26, 2026, sponsored children came together at Happy Kids Fun World in Batticaloa for a full day of activities.
Alongside the monthly stipends that helped families meet children’s basic needs, the day included games, group activities, face painting, refreshments, lunch and a cultural visit to the Kattankudy Museum.
The children came from communities across Sri Lanka. The map on page 6 of the project report shows participants from areas including Trincomalee, Anuradhapura, Ampara, Polonnaruwa, Batticaloa and Kurunegala, reflecting the geographic reach represented at the event.
The Impact
The financial assistance addressed an immediate concern for participating families: helping cover children’s basic needs while reducing some of the financial pressure carried by widowed mothers and guardians.
April’s program deliberately went further.
Children were divided into eight groups and encouraged to participate together in games and entertainment. The activities gave them opportunities to meet other children, build friendships and enjoy experiences outside their normal routines. The visit to Kattankudy Museum added an educational and cultural element to the day.
The photographs throughout the report capture that side of the project particularly well: children riding attractions, playing in a ball pit, trying archery, sharing meals and participating alongside other sponsored children.
Creating a Day Where Children Could Simply Have Fun
Bringing children from different communities together required careful planning.
Transportation was arranged from designated pickup points, children were registered upon arrival and briefed on safety and the day’s activities, and coordinators and volunteers supervised each group throughout the program.
Child protection was also incorporated into the event through close supervision, safe transportation arrangements.
These preparations helped create an environment where the children could participate safely and fully in the day.
Saas Fahman’s Story
For seven-year-old Saas Fahman of Anuradhapura, sponsorship has been part of his life for the past three years.
Saas lost his father five years ago. Since then, his mother has supported the household through a small dress-selling business, but meeting school expenses alongside the family’s everyday needs has been difficult.
Sponsorship assistance has helped Saas continue attending school regularly with learning materials and basic needs supported, while reducing some of the financial pressure on his mother.
Today, he is growing with greater stability and confidence. He enjoys his studies and participating in school activities with his siblings and friends.
More Than One Kind of Support
Children need food, healthcare and the opportunity to stay in school. They also need moments of play, friendship, discovery and belonging.
