Making Thanksgiving Possible for Local Families

In 2024, an estimated 304,700 people in Wayne County, Michigan, experienced food insecurity, representing 17.2% of the county’s population. 

For many families, Thanksgiving is a time to gather around the table, share a meal and spend time together. Yet the cost of preparing a holiday dinner can make that tradition difficult for families already managing financial pressures.

In Hamtramck, Michigan, Life for Relief and Development (LIFE) helped ensure more families could take part in the celebration with the food they needed for a Thanksgiving meal.

198 Families Received Thanksgiving Food

On November 26, 2024, LIFE supported a Thanksgiving food distribution reaching 198 families in the local community.

Families arrived throughout the morning to receive turkeys and traditional Thanksgiving foods. Halal and regular turkeys were available to accommodate different dietary needs, and each family also received side dishes and pumpkin pie to help complete their holiday meal.

Assistance was provided according to family size, with larger families able to receive additional food when needed.

Around 15 volunteers helped with the distribution, guiding families through organized stations for verification, turkeys, side dishes, and pies. Additional community members also volunteered after seeing the distribution underway.

Despite the cold and windy weather, families began arriving early, and all available turkeys were distributed.

More Than Food for the Holiday

Recipients expressed their gratitude for the assistance and the opportunity to celebrate Thanksgiving with their loved ones.

For families facing financial challenges, receiving the ingredients for a holiday meal can mean one less expense to worry about and a chance to enjoy an important tradition together.
