A Wider Circle of Care for 200 Orphaned Children in Sierra Leone Through Life for Relief and Development (LIFE)
When One Loss Can Affect Everything Else
For a child who has lost a parent, financial hardship can quickly reach into school, nutrition, healthcare and daily security. UNICEF reports that about two-thirds of children in Sierra Leone experience poverty in more than one area of life, while only 0.8% of children are covered by social protection systems.
For children already growing up with loss, dependable support can help keep everyday challenges from becoming barriers to their future.
Four Months, 200 Children, Many Forms of Support
From March 10 to June 30, 2026, Life for Relief and Development (LIFE) supported 200 orphaned children, evenly divided between 100 boys and 100 girls, in Freetown, Kenema and Moyamba.
The program went beyond one type of assistance. Children received ongoing sponsorship support to help caregivers manage food, education, healthcare, and other essential needs. During Ramadan, 200 food baskets were distributed, while Eid brought new clothing and footwear. Fresh Udhiyah meat was also provided during Eid al-Adha, and weekend activities gave children opportunities for learning, social connection, and personal development.
Support That Changes with a Child’s Needs
The value of sponsorship is in its consistency.
Food assistance helped families through periods when groceries were harder to manage. Education support helped children remain connected to school. Seasonal clothing allowed them to participate in important celebrations with confidence, while weekend sessions created space for learning, friendships and encouragement.
Caregivers also reported less financial pressure, giving them greater ability to focus on the children’s education, health and development.
Reaching Children Was Not Always Simple
Distance created practical challenges, particularly when assistance needed to reach children living in remote communities. Some sponsorship payments were also delayed by banking and card-activation procedures.
Closer distribution points reduced travel for families, while account issues were addressed so children could receive their scheduled assistance. Weekend and profile activities were arranged around school hours to avoid disrupting education.
Fatmata No Longer Has to Carry the Same Burden
Fatmata used to sell groundnuts by the roadside after school to help her caregiver meet basic expenses.
Through sponsorship, she received support for everyday needs along with Ramadan food, Eid clothing and the opportunity to participate in weekend activities with other children.
Those activities became one of her favorite parts of the program, helping her build confidence while continuing her education.
