After Loss, a Path Forward: Life for Relief and Development (LIFE) Supports Orphaned Children Across Iraq
When Loss Is Followed by Financial Hardship
Losing a parent can affect nearly every part of a child’s life, particularly when the remaining family is already struggling financially. In Iraq, UNICEF reports that 47% of children, approximately 8.7 million, experience multidimensional poverty, while close to 3.2 million school-aged children are out of school.
For orphaned children, support with everyday necessities can help protect something equally important: their ability to remain in school and continue planning for the future.
Two Months of Continued Support
Life for Relief and Development (LIFE) carried out two rounds of orphan sponsorship assistance across Baghdad, Erbil, Dohuk, Mosul, Diyala, Anbar and Basra.
The first took place from May 29 to June 15, 2026, supporting 1,401 orphaned children. A second round, conducted from July 15 to July 30, 2026, reached 1,354 children.
Children and their families received essential food supplies, including rice, lentils, beans, chickpeas, cooking oil, flour, milk and other staples. The program also helped meet broader needs, such as clothing, while encouraging sponsored children to continue their education.
Making Everyday Life More Stable
For families caring for orphaned children, assistance with food and other necessities can relieve some of the pressure on already limited resources. Caregivers are better able to meet daily needs, while children gain greater stability at home.
Education remained an important part of the program. By easing some of the financial strain surrounding basic necessities, sponsorship helped children stay connected to school rather than allowing hardship to determine whether they could continue learning.
A New Beginning for Shams
After losing her father at nine years old, Shams struggled with her studies and eventually left school.
With sponsorship support, she was able to return to her education. Now back in school, Shams described the change simply:
“I started anew to complete my education.”
Her story shows what sustained support can make possible: not only helping a child through the present but reopening a path toward the future they once imagined.
