Care Beyond Treatment: Life for Relief and Development (LIFE) Provides Personal Care Kits in Bethlehem
When Basic Care Is Part of Healthcare
Mental health needs across the West Bank continue to place pressure on already stretched services. WHO identifies mental health and psychosocial needs as a significant public health challenge, while UNICEF reported that needs for mental health and psychosocial support in high-risk areas of the West Bank were exceeding available services in 2026. In the first quarter of the year, 15,012 people in the West Bank received integrated protection and mental health or psychosocial support services through UNICEF-supported efforts.
For people receiving long-term psychiatric care, dignity also depends on having the everyday essentials needed to stay clean, comfortable and cared for.
120 Personal Care Kits for Patients in Bethlehem
From June 4 to June 9, 2026, Life for Relief and Development (LIFE) provided 120 personal care kits to patients at Bethlehem Psychiatric Hospital in the West Bank.
The hospital is the only specialized public psychiatric facility serving patients from governorates across the West Bank. Some residents receive little or no outside family support, leaving the facility responsible for meeting even their most basic personal needs. The kits helped provide approximately one to two months of essential hygiene supplies per patient.
Restoring Comfort and Dignity
Personal hygiene may seem simple, but it can have a meaningful effect on health, comfort and self-respect.
Providing these supplies helped patients maintain daily hygiene while easing pressure on a facility working with limited resources. The kits were prepared to serve both male and female wards and helped strengthen sanitation while reducing the risk of hygiene-related illness.
Care Had to Come With Extra Precautions
Working inside a psychiatric facility required a different approach from a typical distribution.
For patient safety and medical privacy, LIFE could not distribute kits directly or conduct standard beneficiary photographs and handovers. Certain everyday hygiene items can present risks for patients experiencing severe psychiatric episodes.
Instead, all 120 kits were formally transferred to hospital staff, who manage and supervise the use of personal care products according to each patient’s needs. This allowed the assistance to reach patients while respecting clinical safeguards and protecting their dignity.
“They Are Seen, Valued and Not Forgotten”
Hospital staff described the assistance as particularly meaningful because patients receiving psychiatric care can sometimes be overlooked when humanitarian support is distributed.
One message captured the impact simply:
“It tells our residents that they are seen, valued, and not forgotten.”
The care kits filled an immediate practical need while also showing patients that their wellbeing matters.
