In Afghanistan, Ramadan arrived this year against the backdrop of increasing economic hardship, food insecurity, and renewed instability near the Afghanistan–Pakistan border. Millions of Afghans continue to face severe humanitarian conditions after years of conflict, displacement, and economic collapse.

According to the United Nations, more than 23 million people across Afghanistan require humanitarian assistance, while the World Food Programme estimates that millions continue experiencing acute food insecurity. In provinces like Nangarhar, where many families rely on unstable daily labor for survival, even basic staples such as flour and cooking oil have become increasingly unaffordable.

For vulnerable families, the pressure intensifies during Ramadan. Food prices often rise during the special month, while work opportunities decline. Many parents are forced to choose between paying debts, purchasing medicine, or bringing enough food home for Iftar. At the same time, hospitals across the region continue caring for patients affected by border tensions and insecurity, placing additional strain on both medical facilities and struggling families caring for sick relatives.

Life for Relief and Development (LIFE) implemented two Ramadan initiatives between February 7 and February 28, 2026, focused on supporting vulnerable households and war-affected patients in Nangarhar Province. The first project distributed 85 Ramadan food baskets to vulnerable families, reaching approximately 595 direct beneficiaries. Each basket contained essential staples including 50 kilograms of flour, cooking oil, sugar, macaroni, chickpeas, dates, salt, and Rooh Afza, helping families sustain daily meals throughout Ramadan.

At the same time, LIFE launched a Ramadan Iftar Dinner Program at Fatima Zuhra Hospital in Nangarhar, where patients, caretakers, and exhausted medical staff were fasting while navigating the pressures of overcrowded hospital conditions. Over four days, the organization distributed 2,000 nutritious Iftar meals containing beef with rice, salad, fruit, dates, drinks, and water. For many families sleeping beside hospitalized loved ones, meals removed an additional burden.

Despite escalating border clashes, market shortages, and rising food costs caused by border closures between Afghanistan and Pakistan, LIFE teams continued distributions through careful coordination with local elders, hospital administrations, volunteers, and community leaders. Security briefings, controlled distributions, and flexible procurement planning helped ensure assistance reached families safely.

The impact could be seen in the words of beneficiaries themselves.

Rahman, a father working in the market pushing a handcart for minimal daily wages, described the pressure of trying to provide food during Ramadan.

“Many evenings, if our neighbors sent us some food for Iftar, we would survive on that,” he shared. “Now, thanks to LIFE Organization, we will be able to manage our household needs until Eid.”

Inside Nangarhar Hospital, another beneficiary named Nasrat spoke about the emotional relief the Iftar meals provided to families caring for sick relatives.

“Instead of worrying about how to prepare or obtain food for breaking the fast, families could focus their attention on caring for their loved ones,” he explained.

These stories reflect a reality experienced by many Afghan families today: humanitarian aid is not simply about food distribution. It is about restoring moments of stability in environments shaped by uncertainty.

Thanks to the generosity of donors, Life for Relief and Development continues reaching vulnerable communities throughout Afghanistan with programs designed to provide both nourishment and dignity. As millions continue facing hunger, displacement, and economic hardship, sustained humanitarian support remains essential. Every contribution helps families endure difficult circumstances with greater hope and resilience.
