Clean Water Reaches Five Communities in Ghana Through Life for Relief and Development (LIFE)
When Water is Far from Home
For many families in Ghana, safe water is still not close enough. UNICEF reported in late 2025 that 57% of Ghana’s population lacked access to safely managed drinking water. Globally, 2.1 billion people were without safely managed drinking water services in 2024.
In communities where families must travel long distances for water, the effects stretch into everyday life. Time spent collecting water can take children away from school and adults away from work, while unsafe sources can create additional health and hygiene concerns.
Five Wells, Five Communities
Between April and August 2026, Life for Relief and Development (LIFE) completed five water wells with pumps across Ghana’s Eastern Region.
The wells were constructed in Bowkrom, Aduakrom, Asiyaw, Ashiresu and Bokrom, directly benefiting more than 2,950 people. Two projects were completed on May 20, followed by three additional wells on August 22, 2026.
Each well gives residents a reliable source of clean water closer to home.
What Changes When Water Is Nearby
The benefit is measured in more than litres of clean water.
Families no longer need to spend as much time walking to distant sources or carrying heavy containers home. Easier access gives children more time for school, allows adults to focus on work, and gives parents more time for their families.
Clean water also supports better hygiene and reduces reliance on unsafe sources for drinking, cooking, and washing.
Planning for Years of Use
Finding locations with an adequate water supply was one of the challenges faced during construction. Long-term upkeep also had to be considered from the beginning.
Site assessments and water testing were used to identify suitable locations. Local water committees were also established and trained in basic pump care and repairs, helping communities take an active role in maintaining the wells for the future.
Giving Children More Time to Learn
One teacher shared that children had previously missed classes because they needed to help collect water from distant sources.
With water now available closer to home, students have more opportunities to attend school regularly and concentrate on their education.
For these children, a nearby well means more than water. It gives them back time to learn.
