Food Assistance During an Emergency

For displaced families in Gaza, access to food can change from one day to the next.

Loss of income, repeated displacement, rising prices and limited access to basic necessities have made it increasingly difficult for families to maintain regular meals. Many are already coping with the loss of homes, livelihoods and the stability they once relied on.

Between February 19 and March 30, 2026, Life for Relief and Development (LIFE) carried out an emergency food assistance project across the Gaza Strip, providing critical support to vulnerable families facing ongoing food insecurity.

Reaching 15,000 People

Over 41 days, the project delivered two forms of emergency food assistance:

2,000 food baskets provided families with essential food supplies, while 1,000 food aid vouchers gave families greater flexibility to obtain food according to their individual needs.

Together, the distributions reached approximately 15,000 people, including internally displaced families, female-headed households, families with children and groups experiencing severe economic hardship.

Children represented an estimated 60% of the people directly reached.

The Impact

Beyond providing food, the project was designed to give families greater flexibility during an unstable period. Food baskets supplied essential staples, while vouchers allowed recipients to choose items based on their own needs and priorities.

The distribution process also emphasized dignity and accountability. Beneficiary verification and organized distribution procedures helped ensure assistance reached intended recipients in a safe, orderly, and transparent way.

Adapting to Changing Conditions

Delivering assistance across Gaza required constant adaptation as conditions shifted from day to day.

Movement restrictions, security concerns, and damaged infrastructure complicated transportation and access, while food shortages and fluctuating prices added further pressure to sourcing food and distribution.

Teams adjusted schedules and logistics as conditions changed, relying on local networks and advance planning to keep distributions moving.

Despite these challenges, all 2,000 food baskets and 1,000 food vouchers were distributed by March 30, 2026.

Mazin’s Story

For Mazin Omar Abu Qamar, displacement in western Gaza changed the basic rhythm of caring for his family.

Providing food became something he had to think about constantly, with fewer resources and no reliable income to fall back on.

When Mazin received a food basket through the project, it offered something simple but important: food his family could depend on for the days ahead.

For Mazin, the support meant worrying a little less about the next meal and having more time to care for his family, enroll his children in LIFE’s tent school, and help his mother access much-needed medical care.

Meeting an Immediate Need in 2026

For families living through displacement, a food basket or voucher represents more than what is received that day. It can preserve limited resources, help parents provide regular meals and offer some stability during an unpredictable and difficult time.
