Fostering Continuity and Care LIFE’s Orphan Sponsorship Efforts in Sri Lanka

For many orphaned children in Sri Lanka, the loss of a primary caregiver introduces both financial and emotional challenges that extend well beyond the immediate moment. Households led by widowed mothers or guardians often operate with limited income, balancing daily expenses while striving to maintain stability for the children in their care. As of February 2026, these pressures continue to affect access to education, nutrition, and overall well-being.

In such contexts, consistent support becomes a determining factor in whether children are able to remain in school, maintain social connections, and experience a sense of continuity in their daily lives.

Recognizing these needs, Life for Relief and Development supported an orphan sponsorship program in Sri Lanka during February 2026. The initiative provided monthly stipends to orphaned children, alongside structured activities designed to support emotional well-being and social engagement.

A total of 256 children received financial assistance through this program, helping families cover essential costs such as school fees, food, and daily living expenses. In addition to financial support, children participated in group activities that fostered connection, confidence, and a sense of belonging.

Caregivers described the support as both practical and stabilizing. One guardian shared, “Before this, I was constantly worried about how to keep my child in school. Now I feel like we have a path forward.” Another reflected, “This support did more than help us financially. It gave my child a sense that someone is thinking about them.”

Children also experienced the program in meaningful ways. One participant described the gathering as a moment where they felt included and supported, while another caregiver noted, “For a day, they were not thinking about what they lost. They were just children again.”

The program’s impact extended into daily life, easing financial strain while reinforcing emotional resilience among both children and their families.

Although this initiative has provided meaningful continuity, the need for sustained support remains. Ongoing sponsorship plays a critical role in shaping long-term outcomes for orphaned children.
