From Refugees in Dakar to Widows in Bamako, Life for Relief and Development (LIFE) Delivers Ramadan Support Across West Africa

Across parts of West Africa, rising food costs and economic instability continue placing enormous pressure on low-income families. According to the World Bank, millions across Sub-Saharan Africa remain vulnerable to food insecurity as inflation drives up the cost of basic staples such as rice, oil, sugar, and milk. For families surviving on irregular income, the arrival of Ramadan can intensify existing hardship, transforming a sacred month traditionally associated with generosity and shared meals into a period marked by financial stress and uncertainty.
The burden falls especially heavily on widows, elderly residents, refugees, and families already living on the economic margins. In crowded urban communities throughout Senegal, Mali, and the Ivory Coast, many families reduce portions, skip meals, or rely on borrowed support simply to prepare food for Iftar and Suhoor (the meal that breaks the fast and the meal before the fast begins). Elderly individuals living alone and displaced families far from home often face the month with an additional layer of emotional isolation alongside material hardship.
To help ease these growing pressures, Life for Relief and Development (LIFE) implemented a food distribution project across Senegal, Mali, and the Ivory Coast throughout Ramadan. The initiatives reached 430 vulnerable families across Dakar, Bamako, and Abidjan, helping households secure essential food supplies during Ramadan. The distributions prioritized widows, elderly residents, refugees, and low-income families struggling to maintain stable access to food.
Each country’s food baskets reflect local dietary needs and household realities. In Senegal, families received kits containing rice, sugar, cooking oil, coffee, and dates. The project also extended support to Malian refugees living in Dakar who were observing Ramadan far from their homes and support networks. In the Ivory Coast, food boxes distributed in Abidjan included spaghetti, sardines, corned beef, milk, dates, rice, and oil to help families prepare nourishing meals throughout the month. Meanwhile, in Bamako, Mali, vulnerable households received baskets containing rice, sugar, powdered milk, dates, and cooking oil to help reduce the burden of rising food prices.
Despite increasing market costs across the region, LIFE teams and community volunteers coordinated procurement, packaging, and distribution efficiently to ensure families received support on time. Local leaders assisted in identifying the most vulnerable households and helped organize fair and respectful distributions within each community.
Beyond providing immediate nutritional relief, the project also reinforced a sense of solidarity during a time when many families felt overwhelmed by economic uncertainty.
Among the beneficiaries was Ibrahim, a refugee living in Dakar who described the emotional impact of receiving support during Ramadan while living far from his home country. “Living away from my country has not been easy, especially during Ramadan,” he shared. “This support reminded me that we are not alone.”
In the Ivory Coast, a widow named Salla explained how the assistance brought relief to her household during a difficult season. “As a widow taking care of my children alone, it is often difficult to provide enough food,” she said. “This assistance allowed us to observe Ramadan with peace of mind.”
Meanwhile, in Mali, an elderly beneficiary named Ousmane reflected on the deeper meaning behind the support. “For elderly people like me, it is sometimes difficult to meet daily needs,” he explained. “This support during Ramadan reminded us of the importance of compassion and helping one another.”
These stories reveal something larger than food distribution alone. Humanitarian assistance during Ramadan is not only about filling empty kitchens. It is also about restoring reassurance, preserving dignity, and reminding vulnerable families that they are not facing hardship in isolation.
Thanks to the generosity of donors, LIFE continues to support vulnerable communities across Africa through programs that provide both nourishment and emotional relief during times of hardship. As food insecurity and economic pressures continue affecting families throughout West Africa, sustained humanitarian assistance remains critically important.
