For over 13 years, millions of people in Nigeria, especially in the Northeast, North Central, and Northwest, have been living through a severe humanitarian crisis.

In the Northeast, ongoing violence from armed groups and military operations has torn families apart, forced people from their homes, and led to widespread human rights violations. The impact has been devastating. Food is scarce, clean water is hard to find, and access to basic shelter, healthcare, and sanitation is limited.

As of June 2024, more than 2.3 million people across Nigeria are internally displaced. For those who’ve been forced to flee, the danger doesn’t stop when they escape. Displaced families face enormous risks: violence, abuse, exploitation, and trafficking.  This is not just because of the conflicts they leave behind, but because of the uncertainty, vulnerability, and harsh conditions they encounter along the way.

It’s not just conflict that’s pushing families to the edge. Climate change is fueling the fire. In 2024 alone, nearly 7 million people across West and Central Africa were affected by relentless flooding. In Nigeria, almost 400,000 people were displaced as rising waters destroyed homes, fields, and futures across 31 states.

People are being pushed beyond their limits. And they need our help now more than ever.

From February 20th to 27th, the lead-up to Ramadan, Life for Relief and Development USA (LIFE) offered food baskets to families in one of the hardest-hit areas, the Makarahuta IDP camp in Bauchi State.

Through LIFE’s Ramadan food basket initiative, 150 households in the IDP camp in Northeast Nigeria received a full month’s worth of essential food items, including vegetable oil, tomato paste, seasoning cubes, spaghetti, beans, sugar, and tamarind.

For nearly 750 individuals, these food baskets gave them a break from the daily fear of going to bed hungry. For mothers trying to stretch a single meal across an entire day, for fathers feeling helpless, and for children who just want to feel full, these food baskets were a great relief.

However, for every family we reached, many more are still waiting. So many parents are making impossible choices and many children are still hungry. With your continued support, we can reach even more families, providing nourishment to those who so desperately need it.
