When Losing a Parent Creates Financial Uncertainty
For a child who has lost a parent, grief can be accompanied by another difficult reality: the household may suddenly have fewer resources to cover school, food and everyday necessities.
In Ghana, foster parents and other caregivers often take on the responsibility of providing for orphaned children while managing their own financial pressures.
In May 2026, Life for Relief and Development (LIFE) provided sponsorship assistance to 256 orphaned children across four regions of Ghana, helping families meet immediate needs while supporting children’s education and well-being.
Four Regions, 256 Children
Between May 10 and May 13, 2026, sponsorship assistance was distributed across the Greater Accra, Eastern, Oti and Volta regions.
All 256 children registered for the project received their sponsorship assistance, including 118 girls and 138 boys.
The assistance was intended to support essential needs and educational expenses, including school fees and learning materials, while reducing some of the financial burden carried by the foster parents responsible for their care.
The Impact
For the children reached in May, sponsorship provided support in areas that can shape both the present and the future.
Financial assistance helped caregivers manage everyday expenses while giving children greater support to continue their education. By helping with school-related costs and essential materials, the project aimed to prevent financial hardship from becoming another barrier between an orphaned child and the classroom.
The benefits were also felt by foster parents. When some of a child’s expenses are covered, caregivers have more flexibility to manage other household needs during a challenging economic period.
Beyond material assistance, the project reported positive effects on the children’s emotional and psychological well-being, providing a sense of care and support alongside the financial assistance.
Going the Distance to Reach Every Child
One of the greatest challenges was geography.
Some sponsored children lived in remote communities, requiring teams to travel considerable distances to reach them. Despite the logistical demands, all 256 orphans received their sponsorship within the planned timeframe.
The project was carried out by LIFE staff and volunteers, with safety protocols followed throughout the distributions. LIFE also reports its activities to Ghana’s Social Welfare Department as part of the country’s oversight of NGO activities.
One Mother’s Story
For one widowed mother, losing her husband left her struggling to provide for her children.
There were nights when she worried about what she would be able to provide the following day. One of the hardest consequences was watching her child remain home because she could not afford the costs associated with school.
Sponsorship changed that.
With support for educational and basic needs, her child was able to return to school with the necessary clothing and books. For the mother, seeing her child excited about school again represented more than financial relief. It restored a sense of hope within their home.

For an orphaned child, losing a parent can change life in an instant. Financial support cannot replace that loss, but it can help ensure that financial hardship does not determine what comes next.
