In Afghanistan, winter often deepens already fragile living conditions, particularly for families recovering from displacement, economic instability, and natural disasters. As of late December 2025, through early January 2026, vulnerable families in Nangarhar Province were navigating harsh temperatures with limited access to adequate clothing, heating, and shelter. Seasonal conditions place children, elderly individuals, and women at heightened risk, particularly in communities where resources remain constrained following repeated shocks.

Across the country, prolonged economic strain and reduced access to livelihoods continue to limit families’ ability to prepare for winter. For many households, essential items such as warm clothing and blankets remain out of reach, increasing exposure to cold-related illness and compounding existing vulnerabilities.

In response, Life for Relief and Development implemented a targeted winter relief initiative between December 22, 2025, and January 5, 2026, focused on supporting earthquake-affected families in Nangarhar Province. Drawing on its established presence in Afghanistan, LIFE coordinated all aspects of the project directly, ensuring timely delivery and close oversight throughout implementation.

Through this effort, 62 families, representing approximately 434 individuals, received comprehensive winter assistance packages. Each family was provided with essential items, including warm clothing, footwear, blankets, gloves, hats, and socks. These items offered immediate protection against low temperatures while helping families maintain basic comfort during the winter season.

For many recipients, the support extended beyond physical relief. Families described a renewed sense of security in being able to keep their children warm during the coldest period of the year. Parents expressed relief in knowing they could meet immediate seasonal needs without sacrificing other essentials, allowing them to focus on stability within their households.

While this intervention addresses urgent winter needs, seasonal vulnerabilities remain a recurring challenge for many communities. Continued support will play an important role in strengthening household resilience and reducing exposure to future climate-related risks.

LIFE extends its sincere appreciation to all donors who contributed to this effort. Your support ensured that families facing difficult conditions were able to move through the winter months with greater protection and stability.
