LIFE Expands Ramadan Food Support in Sierra Leone, Strengthening Family Stability

In Sierra Leone, many families continue to face persistent food insecurity, driven by economic constraints and limited access to stable income. As Ramadan 2026 approached, vulnerable households across Western Rural, Western Urban, and Port Loko districts were navigating rising food costs while preparing for a month that traditionally centers around shared meals and community connection.
For low-income families, observing Ramadan can present additional challenges when access to food is uncertain. In densely populated areas, where many households rely on irregular income, even daily meals may not be guaranteed.
In response, Life for Relief and Development implemented a Ramadan food basket distribution initiative from February 18–21, 2026, ensuring that vulnerable families could access essential food supplies throughout the month. The organization managed the project directly, maintaining close coordination with local communities to ensure effective delivery.
A total of 150 households received food baskets containing staple items such as rice, oil, tea, and other essential goods designed to sustain families throughout Ramadan. These distributions provided consistent access to food, allowing families to observe the month with greater ease and stability.
Recipients shared that the support transformed what would have been a period of uncertainty into one of relief. Families were able to prepare meals regularly, and the provision of food reduced stress associated with rising costs and limited resources.
While the impact of this effort was immediate, the underlying challenges of food insecurity remain. Continued engagement will be essential in supporting long-term food stability across vulnerable communities.
