Life for Relief and Development (LIFE) Helps Syrian Families Rebuild with Critical Food Relief During Ramadan 2026

Years after the height of Syria’s conflict, families in Zabadani are still living with its consequences. Damaged infrastructure, economic collapse, and widespread unemployment continue affecting households across Rural Damascus, particularly widows, orphaned children, and families displaced during years of siege and instability.
According to the United Nations, more than 16 million people across Syria still require humanitarian assistance, while food prices remain far beyond what many families can afford. In communities like Zabadani, even securing basic groceries during Ramadan has become increasingly difficult for vulnerable households already struggling to recover from years of conflict.
To help address these urgent needs, Life for Relief and Development (LIFE) implemented a Ramadan Food Basket Distribution project in Zabadani between March 3 and March 15, 2026, in coordination with the Zabadani Municipality. The initiative distributed 360 food baskets to widows, orphan-headed households, and vulnerable families throughout the district. Each basket contained enough essential food supplies to sustain a family of four for approximately two weeks, including rice, lentils, sugar, cooking oil, canned goods, and Ramadan staples.
LIFE teams coordinated household assessments, beneficiary verification, procurement, packing operations, and organized distributions directly through local field staff. The project also prioritized female-headed households and families caring for orphaned children, helping reduce some of the financial pressure many families faced during Ramadan.
Among the beneficiaries was Naima, who lost both of her eyes after a shell struck her home in 2014, killing her daughter and leaving her permanently visually impaired. “The basket helped provide our basic food needs and reduced some of our daily burdens,” her family shared.
Another beneficiary, a widow caring for three children after the death of her husband in detention, described the assistance as critical support during an increasingly difficult economic period.
For many families in Zabadani, the food baskets represented more than temporary relief. They offered reassurance during a month when many vulnerable households feared they would once again be left to struggle alone.
Thanks to the generosity of donors, Life for Relief and Development continues to support vulnerable communities across Syria through programs designed to preserve dignity alongside physical well-being. As millions of Syrians continue facing displacement, poverty, and food insecurity, sustained humanitarian support remains essential.
