Life for Relief and Development (LIFE) Supports 358 Orphans in Somaliland Throughout 2026
The Humanitarian Crisis
Throughout 2026, families and children across Somalia and Somaliland have continued to face the effects of drought, food insecurity, rising costs and pressure on essential services.
For children who have lost one or both parents, these pressures can be particularly difficult. When a household is already living on limited resources, the costs of food, clothing, healthcare and education can place an additional burden on the relatives caring for an orphaned child.
Consistent sponsorship can help families meet these needs while providing children with greater stability.
Supporting 358 Orphans Throughout 2026
Through Life for Relief and Development’s (LIFE) Orphan Sponsorship Program, 358 orphans in Somaliland received assistance during 2026. The distributions began on March 15, 2026, with sponsorship assistance provided throughout the year.
The program was directly implemented by LIFE’s Somaliland office, with support from local volunteers and community representatives to help ensure an organized and transparent distribution process.
The Impact
The sponsorship assistance helped families cover some of the most important costs associated with caring for a child, including food, clothing, school fees, educational materials and healthcare needs.
For guardians already managing limited household resources, the assistance also helped reduce financial pressure. Resources that might otherwise have been needed for a sponsored child’s immediate expenses could be directed toward other household priorities.
For the children themselves, this support meant greater access to the essentials that can help them remain healthy, continue their education and experience greater stability in their everyday lives.
Hoodo’s Story
At just 12 years old, Hoodo Mahdi Muumin has already experienced the loss of both of her parents.
Hoodo lives in Borama with her older sister, who takes on small, informal jobs to support them. Despite her sister’s efforts, meeting their basic needs while keeping Hoodo in school remained difficult.
Through LIFE’s Orphan Sponsorship Program, Hoodo received assistance that helped cover her school fees, shoes and essential learning materials.
Today, Hoodo is continuing her education with greater stability and confidence. She dreams of becoming a teacher and hopes that one day she will be able to give back to her community and help other children facing similar circumstances.
Providing Stability Throughout 2026
For an orphaned child, sponsorship cannot replace the parent they have lost. It can, however, help provide some of the stability and practical support needed to continue moving forward.
Throughout 2026, Life for Relief and Development (LIFE) helped 358 orphaned children in Somaliland access financial support for essential needs, while also easing some of the financial pressure carried by their caregivers.
