Monsoon Flood in Northern Pakistan Takes Everything from Villagers, LIFE USA Helps Families Rebuild

Life is full of twists and turns, and we never know what tomorrow will bring. One could say we should expect the unexpected. That has never been truer for the people of Bishnoi, a small village in Northern Pakistan.
In early August, villagers awoke to heavy rain. At first, they thought nothing of it. Monsoon rains are part of life in this region, and they went about their day as usual. Little did they know their lives were about to be upended.
As the hours passed, the rainfall grew heavier with no signs of letting up. Over the following days, rivers swelled, water rose above the banks, and the drainage system overflowed flooding streets and creeping into homes. Anxiety grew. Roads became impassable, livestock was rushed to higher ground, and electricity began to fail.
Then, on August 15th, 2025, disaster struck. Rivers burst their banks, massive landslides thundered through the mountains, and a tremendous flood surged across Bishnoi and nearby villages. Torrential rain continued as homes near rivers and streams were swallowed, forcing families to flee with nothing but what they could carry.
Bishnoi was not alone. Entire regions of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa including Buner, Swat, and Bajaur suffered devastation. While more than 25,000 people were rescued, many others were not so fortunate. At least 776 lives were lost, thousands injured, hundreds remain missing, and vital infrastructure lies in ruins.
The damages already exceed $20 million and that only reflects the initial emergency response. The true cost, including the destruction of agriculture, homes, and livelihoods, will be far greater.
Today, survivors face the impossible task of rebuilding from nothing. Food, clean water, shelter, and medicine are scarce. Families who lost everything now live in uncertainty and fear.
