More Than Basic Needs: Life for Relief and Development (LIFE) Supports Orphaned Children Across Indonesia
When Financial Hardship Shapes Childhood
For children who have lost a parent, financial pressure can affect food, education, healthcare, and the simple experiences that make childhood feel secure. In Indonesia, UNICEF reported in 2025 that 11.8% of children, more than one in nine, live below the national poverty line.
For orphaned children being raised by a single parent, grandparents, or other caregivers, consistent support can provide stability at a time when family resources are already stretched.
Support Across Five Provinces
Between March and August 2026, Life for Relief and Development (LIFE) provided orphan sponsorship assistance across Banten, DKI Jakarta, West Java, Central Java and East Java.
From March 7 through April 9, 153 orphaned children received a combination of food baskets, assistance for everyday needs and new clothing ahead of Eid. A later round from August 5 to 15 supported 100 children with food baskets and additional assistance for essential expenses.
Rather than treating sponsorship as a single type of aid, the program responded to several parts of a child’s life at once.
Helping Families Cover What Matters
Food assistance helped caregivers keep essential groceries available at home, while additional support could be used for needs such as school fees, learning supplies, healthcare, and other everyday expenses.
For the March and April distributions, children also received new clothes before Eid. Beyond meeting a practical need, having something new for the celebration helped children participate in an important occasion with greater confidence and a sense of belonging.
The program also created opportunities for children to gather, play, and spend time with others, adding social connections and positive childhood experiences alongside material support.
Giving Children Room to Dream
One of the children supported in August was Muhammad, a boy from East Java with a visual impairment.
Muhammad dreams of becoming a Dalang, a traditional Indonesian storyteller who brings wayang stories to life. He experiences much of the world through sound, touch and imagination, and his interest in storytelling has become part of how he pictures his future.
Through the sponsorship program, Muhammad received essential support while also spending time playing and connecting with other children. His story is a reminder that supporting a child is not only about what they need today. It is also about protecting their ability to imagine tomorrow.
Childhood Should Still Have Joy
For children like Raihan, sponsorship also created space to express needs they had learned to keep quiet. During a shopping activity, eight-year-old Raihan gradually became comfortable choosing clothes and school supplies for himself, eventually becoming more playful and confident throughout the experience.
Moments like these may seem small, but they give children something important: the freedom to participate in childhood without always carrying adult worries.
