Responding to Food Insecurity

For millions of families, having enough nutritious food remains uncertain. In Somalia, around 6 million people were projected to face crisis levels of hunger or worse between April and June 2026, driven by drought, displacement, high food prices and other pressures. In Ghana, the World Food Programme reports that more than 2 million people are food insecure, the highest level recorded there since 2017.

Against this backdrop, food assistance can provide immediate stability for families already stretching limited resources to meet their daily needs.

MannaPack Rice Reaches Communities in Two Countries

In May 2026, Life for Relief and Development (LIFE) distributed MannaPack Rice to 630 families, approximately 3,780 people, in Garasbaaley on the outskirts of Mogadishu, Somalia. Each family received two boxes of food, with particular attention given to displaced families, orphaned children, older people, and others facing heightened food insecurity.

A second distribution took place in Ghana from August 3 to 14, 2026, reaching 6,000 people across Jasikan, Madina, Sakora P&T, Dodowa and surrounding areas. Orphans, widows, families with limited incomes and other vulnerable community members were among those reached.

Together, these projects provided food support to approximately 9,780 people.

Why MannaPack Rice Matters

MannaPack Rice offers more than a basic source of calories. It is a fortified rice-and-soy meal designed to supplement diets with protein, vitamins and minerals, helping make each serving more nutritionally valuable than rice alone. It is intended to complement other foods as part of a balanced diet.

For families experiencing food shortages, this kind of assistance can help provide more dependable meals while allowing limited resources to stretch toward other essentials such as healthcare, education and shelter.

Reaching Families Despite the Challenges

Delivering food across different communities required careful planning. In Ghana, teams faced the challenge of transporting large quantities of food to more remote areas while responding to high demand. Organized distribution points and careful coordination helped ensure the food reached those identified for support.

In Somalia, beneficiary lists were verified in advance, sites were selected with accessibility and safety in mind, and additional assistance was available for older people, people with disabilities and those unable to carry their food independently.

Hafsa’s Story

Seventeen-year-old Hafsa lives in a displacement settlement in Somalia and cares for her younger orphaned siblings. With very little available, she sometimes gave up her own meals so they could eat.

Receiving two boxes of rice helped give the family a more stable source of food and eased some of the pressure Hafsa had been carrying each day.

Thank You for Helping Put Food Within Reach

Life for Relief and Development sincerely thanks the donors whose generosity made these distributions possible. Their support helped thousands of people prepare meals during periods when food was difficult to afford or access.

With continued support, LIFE can keep reaching families facing hunger and help turn an uncertain next meal into one less worry for the day ahead.
