When There Is Nothing Left to Cook: LIFE Food Assistance Reaches 233 Orphans in Afghanistan

A Childhood Hunger Crisis

Hunger is tightening its grip on Afghanistan's children.

On August 25, UNICEF reported that 3.7 million Afghan children are currently suffering from acute malnutrition, including approximately one million experiencing life-threatening severe acute malnutrition. Children under two account for 83% of severe acute malnutrition cases.

WFP describes Afghanistan as one of the world's most severe hunger crises, with 17.4 million people projected to experience severe food insecurity and 4.9 million mothers and children expected to experience malnutrition in 2026.

For orphaned children whose households have lost a parent and often a source of income, putting enough food on the table can be an even greater challenge.

233 Food Packages for Orphaned Children

From March 30 to April 2, 2026, LIFE provided emergency food assistance to 233 orphaned Afghan children in Laghman and Nangarhar provinces.

The project reached 183 children in Laghman and 50 in Nangarhar.

Each food package contained a substantial supply of staples and household necessities, including flour, cooking oil, rice, macaroni, chickpeas, sugar, beans, tea, soap and other items.

The project was successful in reducing food insecurity and giving households caring for orphaned children enough staple food to meet immediate nutritional needs.

"It Was as if Eid Had Come"

One child's account from the project captures what receiving that food meant.

The family had previously borrowed food from neighbors during Ramadan because there was nothing at home. What remained eventually ran out before Eid.

Then they learned about LIFE's food distribution.

"We became extremely happy, just as if Eid had come for us that very day."

The child thanked LIFE for remembering the family and "bringing smiles back to our faces."

Another family described receiving LIFE's call after struggling to afford even basic food. The child's mother began crying when she learned that assistance was coming.

The Impact Reached Beyond 233 Children

Although 233 orphans received the food packages directly, the food was taken home to households.

The completion report estimates that approximately 1,631 people were positively affected when caregivers and family members are included.

That wider impact matters because hunger is rarely experienced by one child in isolation. When food enters a household, siblings and caregivers can benefit too.

For these families, the food packages represented something immediate and necessary: meals they could prepare at home. 

And for children who had already experienced the loss of a parent, they removed at least one worry from the household for a period of time.
