For days, heavy rain and cold winds have battered Gaza. In tent camps across the territory, water pours through torn fabric and pools beneath thin sleeping mats. Families wake to soaked blankets, damp clothes, and the cold settling deeper into their bones.

Nearly 795,000 displaced Palestinians are at risk of flooding in Gaza’s makeshift camps, wrapping tents in water and forcing families to wade through ankle-deep conditions just to reach dry ground.

In southern Gaza, many displaced people have spent nights trying and failing to keep rain from flooding their tents. With every downpour, the effort becomes more futile. Holes widen, the ground turns to mud, and what little protection remains gives way.

There is no dry place to rest.

A Losing Battle Against the Rain

For families living in tents, winter storms bring more than discomfort. They bring exhaustion.

When rain falls for hours, people stay awake through the night, pushing water out with their hands, lifting bedding off the ground, and trying to shield children from the cold. By morning, mattresses and blankets are unusable, clothes remain wet, and cold air lingers.

This is incredibly dangerous, especially for the young and elderly. Gaza local health officials reported that a baby died from exposure inside a flooded tent, and at least 14 people, including children, have lost their lives during the storms. This shows just how deadly winter conditions have become for families in Gaza, already pushed to the edge.

“Cold, overcrowded, and unsanitary environments heighten the risk of illness and infection,” the U.N. agency for Palestinian refugees. They continue to say, “This suffering could be prevented by unhindered humanitarian aid, including medical support and proper shelter.”

Tents that Were Never Meant for Winter

With 1.5 million people displaced and roughly 300,000 tents still urgently needed to provide safe shelter, Gaza’s winter crisis is as much about infrastructure as it is about rain and wind.

Shelter is the foundation of survival. When it fails, everything else becomes harder. Not all tents are built to withstand winter conditions, and many families do not even have a tent; instead, they use a makeshift shelter made with tarps, ropes, and other materials. These shelters offer little protection from flooding or cold.

LIFE’s Solution

LIFE provides weather-resistant tents designed to better protect families from rain, wind, and low temperatures. These tents use stronger materials and offer improved durability, helping families stay dry, preserve warmth, and regain a measure of stability during winter storms. In conditions like these, the quality of shelter matters.

In addition to high-quality shelters, LIFE also provides winter relief to families suffering in Gaza. Winter jackets, clothing, bedding, blankets, heaters, and wood are among the items that are provided to keep families warm.

“When the rain came, our blankets got wet, and the ground was cold. I couldn’t sleep at night. After we received a stronger tent, warm blankets, winter jackets, and shoes, I was finally able to stay warm.” - Maryam, age 9

“Before the winter aid arrived, every storm meant another night without rest. We stayed awake trying to keep water out and our children warm. Having a weather-resistant tent and winter supplies gave us protection and a small sense of stability again.” - Hassan, age 24

You Can Give Families Relief from the Gaza Flood

As winter storms continue, families across Gaza are bracing themselves for each new downpour. For many, there is no dry place to rest, no warm refuge to recover.

They endure cold, flooding, and exhaustion on top of everything they have already lost.

Providing safe, weather-resistant shelter does not end the suffering; however, it does help families endure the season with greater protection, strength, and dignity.

Give families in Gaza relief. Provide adequate shelter and winter aid that will protect them through the winter.

FAQ

  1. Why are tents flooding in Gaza?

Heavy winter rain, damaged drainage systems, and tents placed directly on the ground have caused widespread flooding across Gaza’s displacement camps. Many shelters are not waterproof or insulated.

  2. How many people are affected by the Gaza flood conditions?

Nearly 795,000 displaced Palestinians are currently at risk of flooding in Gaza, with hundreds of thousands living in makeshift or damaged tents that offer little protection from winter rain.

  3. Why is winter so dangerous for displaced families in Gaza?

Winter in Gaza brings cold temperatures, strong winds, and heavy rain. Flooded tents increase the risk of illness, exposure, and exhaustion, especially for children, the elderly, and those already weakened by hunger or injury.

  4. What happens when tents flood?

When tents flood, families lose dry bedding, warm clothing, and the ability to rest. Prolonged exposure to cold and damp conditions can lead to respiratory illness, hypothermia, and worsening trauma.

  5. How does a weather-resistant shelter help during the Gaza floods?

Weather-resistant tents help keep families dry, retain warmth, and reduce exposure to rain and wind. Proper shelter allows families to rest, recover, and better endure winter conditions.

  6. How is LIFE helping families affected by the Gaza floods?

LIFE provides weather-resistant tents and winter relief supplies, including blankets, bedding, warm clothing, and heaters, to help displaced families stay protected during winter storms.

  7. How can people help families in Gaza during winter floods?

Supporting humanitarian organizations that provide winter shelter and relief helps families access safe housing, warmth, and protection during the most dangerous months of the year.
