Food, School and a Path Forward: Life for Relief and Development (LIFE) Supports 500 Orphaned Children in Afghanistan
Published November 5, 2026

Growing Up During a Humanitarian Crisis
For millions of children in Afghanistan, everyday needs remain difficult to meet. UNICEF estimates that 21.9 million people, including 11.6 million children, will require humanitarian assistance in 2026, as families continue to face economic hardship, food insecurity and limited access to basic services.
For children who have also lost a parent, those pressures can become even harder to navigate.
500 Children Received Continued Support
Through its Orphan Sponsorship Program, Life for Relief and Development (LIFE) supported 500 orphaned children, including 342 boys and 158 girls, with food and essential non-food items.
The project focused on children in Nangarhar Province, with the completion report covering assistance through June 28, 2026. The program aimed to strengthen children's physical well-being, educational development and emotional stability. The report noted improvements in school attendance, concentration, confidence and overall well-being among participating children.
Making the Distribution Safer in Extreme Heat
The assistance was distributed during a period of intense heat.
To make the experience safer and more comfortable for children waiting at the distribution site, refreshments and nutritious foods were made available so they could maintain their energy. The distribution was organized with children's health and well-being in mind.
What Long-Term Support Can Make Possible
One story in the project shows what sustained assistance can look like over time.
Azmoon had been part of LIFE's orphan support program for nearly five years before reaching the program's age limit. During those years, his family received food and other essential assistance.
While receiving that support, Azmoon and his brothers began learning carpentry. They spent nearly four years developing the skill and eventually became able to earn an income and support their family independently.
His brother described their journey as one from dependence toward “dignity, self-reliance, and hope.”
Their story reflects an important purpose of long-term sponsorship: meeting immediate needs while giving children and families greater space to work toward a more independent future.
Support for Children With Additional Needs
The program also reached children facing particularly difficult circumstances.
Juwairia, an orphaned child with significant disabilities, requires ongoing care and medical attention. Her mother explained that financial hardship had made meeting those needs extremely difficult. LIFE's assistance helped ease some of that pressure and contributed toward the child's essential care.
Helping Children Move Forward
Life for Relief and Development sincerely thanks the donors who made this support possible.
For 500 orphaned children in Afghanistan, sponsorship meant food, essential supplies and greater stability during a difficult period. For some, sustained assistance can also create the breathing room needed to remain in school, develop skills and gradually build a more independent life.
The goal is not simply to meet today's needs, but to give children a stronger foundation for what comes next.
