Clean Water, New Possibilities Through Life for Relief and Development (LIFE)’s Water Well Projects in Ghana

In many rural communities across Ghana, access to clean water still shapes the rhythm of daily life. Families often begin their mornings with long walks to distant rivers or seasonal streams, carrying heavy containers back home for cooking, cleaning, and drinking. The water collected from these sources is not always safe, and the consequences are often felt in classrooms and homes alike—missed school days, recurring illness, and time lost to the simple but demanding task of fetching water.

The burden falls most heavily on women and children. Young students frequently leave home before sunrise to help gather water, sometimes arriving late to school or missing lessons entirely. For mothers, the daily search for water can take hours, limiting time that could otherwise be spent caring for their families, cultivating crops, or running small businesses. In villages without reliable wells, the absence of clean water quietly shapes health, education, and economic opportunity.

Recognizing these challenges, Life for Relief and Development (LIFE) completed two clean water projects in Ghana between November 21 and December 17, 2025. The first well, installed in Obdan in Ghana’s Eastern Region, now provides safe water to more than 700 residents. Around the same time, a second water well was completed in Sakora P&T in the Greater Accra Region, serving over 550 community members. Together, these wells now provide reliable access to clean water for more than 1,250 people, offering a sustainable solution to long-standing water shortages in both communities.

The difference has been immediate and tangible. Where residents once spent hours walking to unsafe sources, clean water is now available just steps from their homes. Families report improved hygiene and fewer water-related illnesses, while children can attend school more consistently. In many households, the simple availability of safe water has restored time to study, work, and care for loved ones.

For one young student in Obdan, the well has transformed her education. Before the installation, she often missed school because she had to help her family fetch water. The journey was long and sometimes dangerous. Now, with clean water nearby, she arrives at school on time and is better prepared to learn.

In Sakora P&T, community members describe similar changes. An elderly resident recalled the hardship of walking long distances to fetch water, especially during the rainy season when the roads became difficult and dangerous. With the new well in place, she says the community now feels relief and dignity in being able to access safe water close to home.

Farmers have also noticed the benefits. One father explained that during the dry season, water shortages made it difficult to maintain crops and household health. With reliable access to clean water, families now feel greater stability and confidence in their daily lives.

For LIFE, projects like these reflect a simple but powerful truth: clean water changes everything. It protects health, strengthens education, and allows communities to focus on building a better future rather than searching for necessities.

LIFE extends heartfelt gratitude to the generous donors who made these water wells possible. Through their compassion, more than 1,250 people in Ghana now have reliable access to clean water, a resource that will continue to support healthier families and stronger communities for years to come.
