In 2024, Somalia was once again ranked the hungriest country in the world, according to the 2024 Global Hunger Index, a position it also held back in 2021.

The country continues to grapple with a long-running hunger crisis fueled by persistent conflict, economic instability, and the worsening effects of climate change. With limited government capacity to address these overlapping challenges, more than half of Somalia’s population, 51.3%, is undernourished, the second-highest rate globally in 2024, just behind North Korea. The country also faces the third-highest child mortality rate at 10.6%, and the seventh-highest rate of child wasting at 11.8%.

Over the past decade, Somalia has been on the brink of famine three times: in 2017, 2022, and 2023. While early-warning systems, humanitarian aid, and recent rainfall have helped prevent the worst outcomes and led to notable progress in reducing hunger since 2000, the crisis is far from over. The UN estimates that 4.8 million Somalis will need nutrition support this year.

In February 2025, just before the start of Ramadan, Life for Relief and Development USA (LIFE) delivered 170 food baskets to families living in IDP (Internally Displaced Person) camps. Each family received enough flour, rice, sugar, dates, and sweet drink powder to sustain them for 4 weeks.

For the approximately 1,020 individuals who benefited from the aid, it was more than just food; it was a moment of comfort and dignity during incredibly difficult times.

Aisha is only 10 years old, but she has already endured more heartbreak than most people do in a lifetime. Two years ago, she lost her father to illness. Since then, her mother has done everything she can to hold their small family together, stretching every coin and every meal.

This Ramadan, something changed.

When a food basket arrived filled with rice, oil, lentils, and dates, Aisha’s mother was so grateful, “This generosity has lifted such a burden from my shoulders,” she said. “For a whole month, I don’t have to worry where our next meal will come from. Aisha can finally smile and enjoy Ramadan like a child should.”

Aisha, holding a small bag of dates said  “Thank you. I can have sweets every night now.”

Aisha’s story is just a glimpse into the difference your generosity makes. Because of you, their families had food on the table and a reason to smile during Ramadan.

However, the need in Somalia remains overwhelming. Millions continue to face hunger, uncertainty, and hardship every single day.

Thank you for helping families in Somalia and reminding them they’re not alone. With your continued support, we can keep delivering relief, restoring dignity, and bringing moments of hope to those who need it most.
