Some children learn far too early how to make themselves small. In parts of Somaliland, where prolonged economic hardship and climate-related instability continue to shape daily life, many orphaned children grow up in environments defined not by celebration but by endurance. Recurrent droughts, rising food prices, and limited economic opportunity have placed an extraordinary strain on vulnerable families throughout the region.

According to UNICEF, millions of children across Somalia and Somaliland remain in need of humanitarian assistance, while the World Bank continues to warn that widespread poverty and fragile infrastructure leave many households one emergency away from crisis. For children who have lost one or both parents, those pressures often become magnified inside overcrowded homes already struggling to survive.

Yet poverty does not only deprive children materially. It can slowly narrow a child’s world emotionally as well. Many orphans become accustomed to responsibility before adolescence, grief before emotional maturity, and isolation before friendship. Moments of carefree play, exploration, or simple excitement begin to feel increasingly rare.

Humanitarian work often focuses, understandably, on food, shelter, medicine, and survival. But psychologists and child development specialists have long emphasized another essential truth: joy itself is part of healthy development. A child who feels included, encouraged, and emotionally safe is more likely to develop resilience, confidence, and social connection later in life.

That understanding shaped Life for Relief and Development’s (LIFE) 2026 Global Orphans Party in Somaliland. On March 28, 2026, LIFE brought together 161 orphaned children and their guardians in Borama for a day intentionally designed around happiness, belonging, and emotional restoration. The organization directly coordinated every aspect of the event, from transportation and volunteer supervision to recreational activities, refreshments, and gift distribution. Children were transported by bus to designated recreation stations where volunteers guided them through games, group activities, and play experiences many had rarely encountered before. Music, laughter, movement, and conversation gradually transformed the atmosphere into something deeper than entertainment. For many children, it became a space where they could briefly set aside the emotional weight they carried every day.

Throughout the celebration, children and guardians shared refreshments including sweets, drinks, biscuits, and snacks before each child received toys and playing cards to take home. LIFE staff and volunteers remained closely involved throughout the event, ensuring every child felt welcomed and included. Local community leaders and volunteers also assisted with identifying vulnerable children and coordinating logistics to ensure the day unfolded safely and smoothly. While the activities themselves appeared simple on the surface, their emotional impact was profound. The event offered many children something they had not experienced in a long time: the freedom to simply be children again.

Among them was Khadra, an 11-year-old girl living with her grandmother. According to the project report, she arrived hesitantly, observing the celebration from a distance before eventually being encouraged by a volunteer to join the activities. Slowly, her reserve disappeared. “For the first time in a long while,” the report reflected, “Khadra laughed without holding back.”

Another child, 13-year-old Abdirahman, had become increasingly withdrawn after losing his parents. Initially standing apart from the other children, he eventually accepted an invitation to join a group game. What began as cautious participation soon evolved into laughter, teamwork, and friendship. “That day gave Abdirahman something priceless,” the report stated, “a sense of connection and belonging.”

These moments may seem fleeting, but for children navigating grief, instability, and loneliness, they can become deeply formative memories. Humanitarian aid is often measured through numbers and distributions, yet some of its most lasting impacts cannot easily be quantified. Sometimes relief looks like a meal. Sometimes it looks like safety. And sometimes, it looks like a child laughing freely after months or years of emotional silence.

Thanks to the generosity of compassionate donors, LIFE continues to invest in programs that care for vulnerable children holistically, addressing both physical needs and emotional well-being. As humanitarian challenges continue across Somaliland and surrounding regions, sustained support remains critically important. Every contribution helps create moments of dignity, belonging, and hope for children whose lives have been shaped by hardship far too early. Through continued generosity, LIFE can continue ensuring that vulnerable children are not defined solely by what they have lost, but also by the possibilities that still lie ahead.
