Children in Mali are growing up amid overlapping crises. Ongoing armed conflict, displacement, food insecurity, and poverty have eroded family structures and access to essential services. According to UNICEF, more than 7.1 million people in Mali require humanitarian assistance, over half of them children. Between mid-2023 and mid-2024, an estimated 1.5 million children suffered from acute malnutrition, driven by instability and rising food costs. For orphaned children, these conditions often mean the loss of education, untreated illness, and exposure to exploitation.

In Bamako and surrounding areas, orphanhood is frequently accompanied by displacement and economic hardship. Families caring for orphaned children struggle to meet daily needs, particularly when income is irregular or nonexistent. School attendance becomes inconsistent as children miss classes due to hunger, illness, or lack of supplies. Health care is delayed or avoided altogether, allowing preventable conditions to worsen. For many children, survival takes precedence over learning.

During the first quarter of 2025, Life for Relief and Development (LIFE) supported 101 orphaned children in Bamako through its Orphan Sponsorship Program. The monthly assistance helped families cover basic needs, including food, school expenses, and healthcare. Beyond material support, the program aimed to restore stability and routine, ensuring children could attend school regularly, access medical care when needed, and grow in a safer, more predictable environment.

Caregivers reported noticeable improvements in children’s health, emotional well-being, and school participation. Sponsorship enabled access to education for orphans and displaced children, improved nutrition, and provided psychosocial reassurance during periods of uncertainty. For families affected by conflict and loss, consistent support offered relief from constant financial pressure and reduced the need for harmful coping strategies.

For the children themselves, the impact was deeply personal. One beneficiary described returning to school every day with books and renewed ambition. “I even dream of becoming a nurse to help sick children in my village,” the child said, noting improved health and regular medical check-ups.

Another child recalled a frequent illness and missed school after losing a parent. “When LIFE began helping our family, everything became better,” the child said, describing access to medical care that was previously out of reach.

A third beneficiary spoke of chronic hunger following the death of a father during the conflict. “Some days we only ate once, and I went to school with an empty stomach,” the child said. Since joining the program, food support has improved concentration and energy, allowing learning to resume with greater focus and dignity.

In Mali, where children are often the first to bear the weight of crisis, sustained support can interrupt long-term harm. LIFE’s orphan sponsorship work reflects a broader commitment to protecting childhood in fragile settings, helping children remain healthy, staying in school, and imagining a future beyond survival.
