In Myanmar’s Rakhine State, daily life for many is filled with hardship and uncertainty. The ongoing conflict has made it nearly impossible for families to move freely, find work, or access even the most basic services. With healthcare out of reach and incomes nearly nonexistent, people are trapped in a constant struggle just to get by.
Among them is Salma Khatu, a 44-year-old mother from Arakan. Salma’s story is heartbreaking, but sadly, not uncommon. Abandoned five years ago, she now bears full responsibility of caring for her seven young children, alone and under the toughest of conditions.
They live in the Thet Kay Pyin IDP camp, in a shelter built from scraps. It offers little protection from the weather and is crowded and fragile. Each day, Salma works tirelessly to provide for her children, despite having so few resources. What keeps her going is the hope she sees in her children’s eyes, children who, even in the face of poverty and displacement, remain eager to attend school.
Across Myanmar, more than 3 million people have been forced to leave their homes. Most depend on international assistance to survive. Families like Salma’s face not just hunger and illness, but also the emotional weight of not knowing what tomorrow will bring.
On February 28th, 2025, Life for Relief and Development was able to deliver 115 food baskets to displaced Rohingya families in Thet Kay Pyin village.
Each basket was thoughtfully prepared to sustain a family throughout the month. The contents included:
● 25 kilograms of rice
● 2 liters of vegetable oil
● 1.6 kilograms of red lentils
● 1.6 kilograms of dried chili
● 2 kilograms of onions
● 1 tin of milk
● 5 packs of noodles
● 2 kilograms of sugar
● 1 pack of salt
● 2 kilograms of flour
● 1 pack of vermicelli
Though small compared to the scale of the crisis, this support meant everything to the families who received it. We extend our thanks to all the generous donors whose compassion made this vital food distribution possible. Your support has brought much-needed relief to hundreds of families like Salma’s.
As thousands continue to struggle with hunger, illness, and insecurity, we humbly ask for your continued support. Together, we can continue to make a difference, one family, one meal, and one act of kindness at a time.
