Currently, millions of people in Kenya are struggling to access sufficient food. Acute food insecurity is a situation in which individuals face an immediate danger to their lives or livelihoods due to insufficient food consumption. It's a severe form of hunger requiring urgent action to protect and save lives. Approximately 2.8 million people in Kenya are facing acute food insecurity. That’s more than twice the number from just a year ago. Sadly, the situation is expected to deteriorate further in the coming months.

Kenya is at the forefront of the global climate crisis. Erratic and extreme weather conditions increasingly impact the country. Rainfall has become dangerously unpredictable. When it doesn’t come, crops fail.  When it does, it often comes all at once, causing floods that destroy homes, farms, and roads. In the past year alone, flooding and droughts have killed hundreds of people and forced nearly 300,000 to flee their homes.

Agriculture remains the backbone of Kenya’s economy. However, the land is fragile, with 80% of it classified as dry or semi-arid, and almost all crops rely on rainfall. Rural communities, where 95 percent of crops are rain-fed, are especially exposed to these challenges. When the weather turns, farmers lose everything. Livestock die. Harvests vanish. Families go hungry.

Even when food is available, it’s not always affordable. Problems in the food supply chain mean high prices and limited supplies. For many families, especially in rural areas, putting food on the table is a daily struggle.

On March 7th, 2025, in the spirit of compassion and community, Life for Relief and Development USA (LIFE) reached out to families in the small fishing town of Msambweni, located in southeastern Kenya. During the month of Ramadan, the goal was simple: to ensure families struggling financially had enough food to break their fasts with peace of mind.

Thanks to this effort, 67 food baskets packed with essential food staples were distributed to local households.

Each basket included:

●      10 kilograms Sugar

●      10 kilograms Rice

●      10 kilograms Unga Ngano (wheat flour)

●      10 kilograms Posho (corn flour)

●      3 liters Cooking Oil

●      2 kilograms Majani (tea leaves)

●      2 kilograms Salt

These baskets provide nourishment for about 614 people, offering comfort and relief during a time that is both spiritually meaningful and physically demanding.

In a region where food insecurity is a growing challenge, especially in rural areas, small acts of generosity like this make a big difference. LIFE would like to thank all its generous donors whose compassion made this Ramadan initiative in Msambweni possible.

As the need continues to grow in Kenya and beyond, we ask for your continued support. Your donations provide critical relief to those who need it most.
