In Haiti, hunger has reached devastating levels. The World Food Programme and FAO warn that more than 5.4 million Haitians, nearly half the population, are now facing acute food insecurity. In areas such as Cité Soleil, one of Port-au-Prince’s largest and most volatile neighborhoods, families endure days without food as political instability, violence, and economic collapse deepen the crisis.

Against this backdrop, Life for Relief and Development (LIFE) launched an orphan sponsorship and food distribution project across neighborhoods surrounding Cité Soleil, including Lizon, Nazon, Bel-Air, and Ravine Pintade. Conducted in two phases, March 3 to 15 and August 16 to 30, 2025, the program provided essential food and cash support to orphaned children and their caregivers.

A total of 142 orphans were reached, each receiving food baskets containing staples such as rice, flour, beans, cooking oil, and hygiene items. In some cases, cash distributions replaced in-kind aid where transporting food through unsafe areas was not possible. Every child in the program was registered under a unique LIFE identification code to ensure fairness and accountability.

For many of the recipients, the support meant a brief but vital reprieve from the hunger that dominates daily life. “We cannot say everything has changed,” one caregiver said, “but for the first time in months, the children could sleep without crying from hunger.”

Among the beneficiaries was Buteau Von Roman, a young boy orphaned after losing both parents before his third birthday. Now in the care of his aunt, he survives on the aid provided by LIFE. Another child, Paul Leo Kensley, lives with disabilities and a widowed mother who struggles to provide for him. “Without this help, we wouldn’t make it through the month,” she said.

Thank you to all donors who made this project a possibility.
