Within the Rohingya refugee camps of Cox’s Bazar, access to specialized healthcare remains limited despite the presence of nearly one million displaced individuals. Eye care, in particular, is significantly under-resourced, with only a handful of organizations providing services across the camps. As a result, many individuals live with untreated conditions that affect daily functioning, mobility, and quality of life.
In Camp 1W, Kutupalong, the demand for consistent medical care continues to grow, particularly for conditions related to vision. Left untreated, these issues can lead to long-term complications, further restricting independence and opportunity.
To address this gap, Life for Relief and Development supported the establishment and operation of a Vision Care Center serving Rohingya refugees between May and October 2025. The program focused on delivering accessible, high-quality eye care services within the camp setting.
During the reporting period, 3,427 patients received treatment, including 112 individuals who underwent cataract procedures. The center diagnosed and managed a wide range of conditions, providing medication, consultation, and follow-up care to those in need.
For many patients, the impact was life-changing. One individual shared, “I had forgotten what it felt like to see clearly. Now I can move without fear.” Another explained, “This treatment gave me back something I thought was gone forever.”
Beyond physical outcomes, the intervention restored confidence and independence. Patients described being able to return to daily tasks, care for family members, and engage more fully with their surroundings.
One caregiver reflected, “When you can see again, everything changes. Life feels possible.”
While this initiative has addressed critical healthcare gaps, the need for continued medical services remains significant. Sustained support will be essential in maintaining access and expanding reach.
This work reflects the commitment of donors whose contributions continue to restore health, dignity, and opportunity for vulnerable communities.
