For many families in Laghman and Nangarhar, daily life is shaped by uncertainty around food. As February 2026 unfolded, rising prices and limited income opportunities made it increasingly difficult for caregivers to provide consistent meals, particularly for households supporting orphaned children. In these settings, food insecurity is not occasional; it is ongoing, affecting both physical well-being and the stability of daily routines.
These conditions are compounded by broader economic strain and regional instability, which continue to limit access to essential goods. For children who have lost one or both parents, the impact is more pronounced, as extended family members often carry the responsibility of care with limited resources.
To ease this pressure, Life for Relief and Development implemented a focused food assistance program in February 2026, designed specifically to support orphaned children and their households. Working directly through its local office, LIFE coordinated procurement, packaging, and distribution to ensure timely and consistent delivery.
Support was delivered to 233 orphaned children in the form of comprehensive food packages, each containing staple items such as flour, rice, oil, legumes, and other essential goods. These supplies were structured to meet household needs over an extended period, helping reduce the immediate strain on caregivers.
The effect was immediate within households. One caregiver explained, “Before this, we were taking each day as it came. Some days we had enough, and some days we didn’t. Now, for this month, I know my children will eat.” With that consistency in place, families were able to shift their attention toward maintaining routines and supporting children’s daily activities.
Beyond the practical impact, there was a noticeable change in the atmosphere within the home. The constant pressure surrounding food began to ease, allowing children to engage more fully in school and everyday life without the same level of underlying stress.
Although this support provided meaningful relief, the broader challenges affecting food access remain. Continued engagement will be essential in ensuring that children and their families can move toward greater stability over time.
